Farewell to Lisbon

Our short stay in Lisbon has come to an end. We had no expectations of Portugaql or Lisbon so we were pleasantly surprised by how nice a place it is. We were fortunate that the weather was warm but I suspect it can change very quickly and can get bitterly cold, thanks to its position right on the Atlantic. In fact up until now Lisbon is the only place where I had to put on a jumper, at the end of a warm day when it cooled down very quickly and the wind was cold - remind you of somewhere, like Melbourne for instance? This is the only time on the trip so far when I have had to even think of wearing a jumper.

Most of the cities we have visited on this trip and the previous have had narrow pavements and cobbled streets and pavements. This makes for a really pleasant setting and the cobbled streets slow the cars down beautifully. They are not however friendly to high heels and wheeled vehicles such as prams, though people clearly manage. The same applies to the Metro systems which in many cases are very old and can have long tunnels and several staircases. Lisbon is a little harder than the others though because of the many hills.

The last 2 photos I am posting here relate to the "ascensor" elevator. From the street level you can see the walkway that extends from the elevator, quite high up. The other photo shows the same patch of street from the walkway.
