Malta

Our 48 hours in Malta came and went in the blink of an eye. Robert managed to find a lot of time to spend with us even though he was in a very busy week and we are grateful for his time. It was great to catch up with Joanna and the children too, it made the "stopover" *for want of a better term) really worth while. Sincere apologies to everyone (especially Uncle Ossie who rang up to say "hi"), we3 simply didn't have the time to fit anyone else in during such a short stay.

We did manage to get a bit done though. I managed to scoff half a dozen mqaret (last 2 pictured), a couple of cans of Kinnie, a Dr Pepper (yes I do like it even though I know everyone else hates it - no correspondence will be entered into!), 2 kannoli, coffee at Cordina's, a beautiful lunch at Valletta and a wonderful tuna in Marsaxlokk, as well as the biggest pizza I have ever seen.

In terms of non-food related activities, we watched the sun rise over Marsamxett Harbour, managed a couple of rides on Malta's bone-shaking buses (cheaper than a chiropractor) but sadly couldn't get on the ferry to Valletta from Sliema; walked along the harbour, up & down Valletta, and several times along the Sliema waterfront. Robert also drove us around half the island and proved that even after living on the island most of your life you can still run into places where you have never been before, didn't know existed, and are (temporarily) lost.

We watched England do what they needed to do to qualify for the round of 16 and were out and about to witness the inevitable carcade that followed (sadly none of the photos really brought this out so I haven't included any of them). The restaurant we went to on our second day had agreed to show the Socceroos on their big screen TV, and they did so for the first half. Then they changed to the Germany game at the request of another customer and after a couple of flip flops they agreed to show each game for a few minutes at a time before flipping to the other channel. It was sad that we didn't make it (why coiuldn't Ghana have beaten Germany 1-0 rather than the other way around?) but at least the Socceroos fought valiantly and salvaged some pride. A win, draw and loss like last time - except this time it wasn't good enough thanks to that 4-0 drubbing by Germany in the first game.

Following are a handful of the photos taken during our short stay on the island.

Following is a picture of Grand Harbour from the memorial to the Unknown Soldier looking at Birgu and Fort st Angelo.

And finally, a picture of Marsamxett Harbour looking at Valletta.
